We study strong coupling effects in four-dimensional heterotic string models where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken with large internal dimensions, consistently with perturbative unification of gauge couplings. These effects give rise to thresholds associated to the dual theories: type I superstring or M-theory. In the case of one large dimension, we find that these thresholds appear close to the field-theoretical unification scale $\sim 10^{16}$ GeV, offering an appealing scenario for...

We propose a minimal nonlinear model of brittle crack propagation by considering only the motion of the crack-tip atom. The model captures many essential features of steady-state crack velocity and is in excellent quantitative agreement with many-body dynamical simulations. The model exhibits lattice-trapping. For loads just above this, the crack velocity rises sharply, reaching a limiting value well below that predicted by elastic continuum theory. We trace the origin of the low limiting...

The free field theory for Regge trajectory is described in the framework of the BRST - quantization method. The physical spectrum includes daugther trajectories along with parent one. The applicability of the BRST approach to the description of a single Regge trajectory without its daughter trajectories is discussed. The simple example illustrates the appropriately modified BRST construction for the needed second class constraints.

We investigate the contribution of zero-point motion, arising from fluctuations in kaon modes, to the ground state properties of neutron star matter containing a Bose condensate of kaons. The zero-point energy is derived via the thermodynamic partition function, by integrating out fluctuations for an arbitrary value of the condensate field. It is shown that the vacuum counterterms of the chiral Lagrangian ensure the cancellation of divergences dependent on $\mu$, the charge chemical potential,...

We study numerically conductance fluctuations near the integer quantum Hall effect plateau transition. The system is presumed to be in a mesoscopic regime, with phase coherence length comparable to the system size. We focus on a two-terminal conductance G for square samples, considering both periodic and open boundary conditions transverse to the current. At the plateau transition, G is broadly distributed, with a distribution function close to uniform on the interval between zero and one in...

The goal of this program was to address instrumentation problems associated with studying unsteady supersonic and subsonic combustion flows by extending the Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) technique and developing surface techniques capable of pressure, temperature, and heat transfer measurements. Optical-based non-intrusive instrumentation was designed and demonstrated in the Supersonic Combustion Tunnel at Wright Laboratory. The following tasks were accomplished: (1) Significant...

We report here on extragalactic large-scale structures uncovered by a deep optical survey for galaxies behind the southern Milky Way. Systematic visual inspection of the ESO/SRC-survey revealed over 10000 previously unknown galaxies in the region 265 < l < 340, |b| < 10. With subsequently obtained redshifts of more than 10% of these galaxies, new structures across the Milky Way are unveiled, such as a filament at ~ 2500 km/s connecting to the Hydra and Antlia clusters, a shallow...

A model of rods with heads of variable size, which are confined to a planar surface, is used to study the influence of the head group size on tilted phases in Langmuir monolayers. Simple free energy considerations as well as exact zero temperature calculations indicate that molecules with small head groups tilt towards next nearest neighbors, and molecules with larger head groups towards nearest neighbors. This provides a possible explanation for recent experimental results, and for details of...

(Shortened Abstract). We analyze a redshift sample of Abell/ACO clusters and compare them with numerical simulations based on the truncated Zel'dovich approximation (TZA), for a list of eleven dark matter (DM) models. For each model we run several realizations, on which we estimate cosmic variance effects. We analyse correlation statistics, the probability density function, and supercluster properties from percolation analysis. As a general result, we find that the distribution of galaxy...

Based on the Hellman-Feynman theorem it is shown that the average square radius of a cloud of interacting bosons in a parabolic well can be derived from their free energy. As an application, the temperature dependence of the moment of inertia of non-interacting bosons in a parabolic trap is determined as a function of the number of bosons. Well below the critical condensation temperature, the Bose-Einstein statistics are found to substantially reduce the moment of inertia of this system, as...

The quantum Hall system in the lowest Landau level with Zeeman term is studied by a two-state model, which has a chiral invariance. Using a diagrammatic analysis, we examine this two-state model with random impurity scattering, and find the exact value of the conductivity at the Zeeman energy $E = \Delta$. We further study the conductivity at the another extended state $E = E_1$ ($ E_1 > \Delta$). We find that the values of the conductivities at $E = 0$ and $E = E_1$ do not depend upon the...

We study the folding of the regular two-dimensional triangular lattice embedded in the regular three-dimensional Face-Centred Cubic lattice, a discrete model for the crumpling of membranes. Possible folds are complete planar folds, folds with the angle of a regular tetrahedron (71 degrees) or with that of a regular octahedron (109 degrees). We study this model in the presence of a negative bending rigidity K, which favours the folding process. We use both a cluster variation method (CVM)...

We study the dynamics of the SK model modified by a small non-hamiltonian perturbation. We study aging, and we find that on the time scales investigated by our numerical simulations it survives a small perturbation (and is destroyed by a large one). If we assume we are observing a transient behavior the scaling of correlation times versus the asymmetry strength is not compatible with the one expected for the spherical model. We discuss the slow power law decay of observable quantities to...

A natural architecture for nanoscale quantum computation is that of a quantum cellular automaton. Motivated by this observation, in this paper we begin an investigation of exactly unitary cellular automata. After proving that there can be no nontrivial, homogeneous, local, unitary, scalar cellular automaton in one dimension, we weaken the homogeneity condition and show that there are nontrivial, exactly unitary, partitioning cellular automata. We find a one parameter family of evolution rules...

We present an elementary model of the collapses and revivals in the visibility of the interference between two atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We obtain different predictions of the revival times whether we conserve or break atom number conservation from the outset. The validity of Bose-broken symmetry can be tested by observations of these collapses and revivals.

We review the non linear sigma model approach (NLSM) to spin chains and spin ladders, presenting new results. The generalization of the Haldane's map to ladders in the Hamiltonian approach, give rise to different values of the $\theta$ parameter depending on the spin S, the number of legs $n_{\ell}$ and the choice of blocks needed to built up the NLSM fields. For rectangular blocks we obtain $\theta = 0 $ or $2 \pi S$ depending on wether $n_{\ell}$, is even or odd, while for diagonal blocks we...
